This is the northernmost town of the Republic of Croatia and lies on the border with Slovenia. The town by the river Mura has a century-long mining tradition. Coal-mining dates back to the end of the 19th century. At the peak of the mining period, 1500 miners were employed in the mine.
In the 19th century, man started to extract crude oil from several sites near the village of Peklenica. The oil which was called "pekel" (hell) also gave its name to the village. Today, a replica of a drilling rig with an information board stands on one of the former oil wells.
Mursko Središče also has a promenade alongside the river Mura with docks and an amphitheatre. Throughout the whole year the promenade is a venue for numerous events; the event "Ljeto uz Muru" (Summer by the river Mura) which takes place in the beginning of August being the most famous one.
